Three-point lighting
Pick a preset, then move one light at a time and watch the face and the plan.
Light a Rembrandt portrait at about a 4:1 ratio with a rim light.
Ratio shown as the lighting ratio (key + fill) : fill, the lit side of the face against the shadow side, so 2:1 = 1 stop and 4:1 = 2 stops; crews who quote key : fill would call our 4:1 a 3:1. The fill is assumed to reach both sides of the face equally. Fill, back and background lights are daylight (5600K) units, and the camera is white-balanced to 5600K, so a 3200K tungsten key reads orange. A teaching model: direct light only, no bounce off the wall, exposure fixed.
